5 Winter Break Learning Ideas for Kids

With winter break right around the corner, many parents are wondering what types of activities their children can do while they’re away from school to keep them learning and entertained.

Research shows that over the summer break, children lose about two months’ worth of math skills. While a short two or three weeks in December doesn’t have the same impacts, you might be thinking of some educational opportunities over the holiday break. That’s why we’ve gathered a few ideas to keep your child sharp and having fun over the break.

#1 Find an Orlando Daycare

Kids & Company Learning Centers offer a great “winter camp” program for kids that is not only fun, but also offers an opportunity for children to learn valuable characteristics like empathy, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Not all parents are able to take off work, so finding a daycare is a great way to keep them entertained throughout the day.

#2 Bake Together

The holidays are perfect for baking sweets! By taking out that cherished family recipe or trying something new, you are sharing the love while teaching a little math and science too.

#3 Take a Day Trip

Explore the city and find some new adventures. Take a trip to the Orange County Regional History Center or the Orlando Science Center. With so many fun places to learn in Orlando, it’ll be hard to choose which one to go to first!

During the school year, it might be challenging to reserve time for these trips, but they can be educational, rewarding, and fun for the whole family.

#4 Send Holiday Cards and Write Thank-You Notes

Whether you’re sending them out to family or writing them for their school teachers, drafting these cards are a great way to practice handwriting and vocabulary skills over the break.

You can even go over how to send the letters and take a trip to the post office to see where the magic happens.

#5 Build Something

If your child is a little older, maybe a DIY project is the perfect activity for the holiday break. Building is the foundation for engineering, whether your child uses Legos, clay, or computer code.

The holidays are a rejuvenating time of year that give families time to make new memories and observe traditions. However, for parents looking for ways to spend the break with their children or searching for ways to expand the opportunity for learning, there are numerous ways.

Kids & Company offers so much more than the typical Orlando daycare. Free hot meals, free afternoon transportation, after school care until 7:00 pm, and we even have the option for Saturday and night care at our Curry Ford location. If you have any questions about our programs, including infant care, childcare, VPK, or after school programs give us a call at (407) 227-1015.
