Orlando After School Programs & Homework Helpers

Wednesday, October 19, 2016

Helping children develop good homework habits is like teaching them to brush their teeth or go to bed on time: it takes a routine and consistency. Sometimes parents are busy at work until later in the evening, which is why a trusted after school care program can help teach these good homework habits.

At Kids & Company, our program staff is available to assist children with homework-related tasks. If they don’t have any homework assigned to them, educationally supportive activities are a great way to promote learning in a fun way. These types of activities may include; read-a louds, buddy reading, books, story writing, creative dramatics, and journal keeping. Games that enhance children's problem solving skills, deductive reasoning skills, and math related skills.

Here are some ways to help with homework, even if it’s not physically helping them solve the problems.

1. Establish a Workspace and Routine

In an after school program, children have a set time to accomplish tasks before they get home for the night. We establish this routine, right after snack time, to help encourage productivity.

2. Organize Assignments

Even if they don’t finish their homework in after school care, helping organize and prioritize homework assignments can help avoid frustration or feeling overwhelmed.

3. Allow Time for Fun

While it’s good to have a routine for homework, it’s important to allow time for fun. Take a break every 20 minutes is necessary. In our large, fenced playgrounds our after school kids feel freedom in a relaxed atmosphere. Children are encouraged to interact with one another in positive ways and just have fun.

Kids & Company offers so much more than the typical Orlando after school program, with after school care until 7pm and even the option for Saturday and night care at our Curry Ford location. With three locations around Orlando, there is a convenient location for you and your child. If you have any questions about our programs, including: infant care, childcare, voluntary prekindergarten (VPK), or after school programs, give us a call at (407) 227-1015.
